Dynamic Load Monitoring (UK) Ltd. (DLM) hosted an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course for staff at its facility in Southampton. DLM was joined by representatives of sister company, Vulcan Offshore Ltd.

DLM — a supplier of load cells, load monitoring technology, and cable working equipment to the lifting, rigging, wind energy, and wider renewables sector — invited local charity, PBS4, to lead its in-house, one-day course. PBS4 provides neurodisability services that enable people with learning disabilities, autism, and challenging behaviour to have independent lives and to live in their own home.

The course was led by Mark Atkinson, of PBS4, which is located on the same business park, eliminating the need to travel. All DLM staff were given the opportunity to participate, and the allocation quickly filled up. Plans are already afoot to run the same course at a later date for those unable to take part.

Nick Fayle, Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) manager at DLM, said: “EFAW training is a vital component of workplace health and safety, equipping staff with the essential skills and confidence to respond effectively to medical emergencies. Whether dealing with minor injuries or life-threatening situations, trained employees can provide immediate care that may prevent conditions from worsening and even save lives.”

As Fayle added, beyond compliance with legal obligations under The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, having qualified first-aiders on-site helps to promote a culture of safety, reduce downtime from incidents, and reassures staff that their wellbeing is a priority. He said: “In high-risk environments especially, this training is not just beneficial — it is essential.”

Carly Collins, sales and marketing director at DLM, said: “A couple of years ago, we installed a defibrillator on the front wall of our building for our business park and the wider community to use. Now, as part of our continued commitment to safety, we are taking that one step further by ensuring our team members are trained not only in its use, but also across all areas of first aid.

“I’m proud that so many of our team have taken up the opportunity given to them to complete this training. It shows a real commitment to looking out for one another and reflects the values that guide us as a business — professionalism, accountability, and respect are at the heart of what we do, and this is a great example of those values in action.”

Matthew Hill, marketing executive at DLM, and one of the course participants, said: “It was great to see the company putting such a strong emphasis on the safety and wellbeing of its employees. The course itself gave us the confidence, awareness, and the skills that could enable us to save a life at work, at home, or in public.

“It is really helpful that DLM are putting time aside for us to build on our skillsets and, with this training being delivered on-site, it makes it easy to fit it into the working day without the added pressure of travel. The company proactively providing these types of courses for us demonstrates to me that safety is treated as a priority at DLM — not an afterthought.”
